Mendoza Harvest Festival  / Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia

The province of Mendoza has some of the loveliest scenery in Argentina and throughout the year offers travels plans for everyone. But one of the moments most looked forward to is when March arrives and with it the National Grape Harvest Festival, an important popular celebration in honor of wine.

Harvest time

In the era of the immigrants it became traditional to celebrate with dances and music at the end of the grape harvest. Part of the ritual was choose the most beautiful woman and crown her with vine leaves and bunches of grapes. That was the origin of the National Grape Harvest Festival, which has been held since 1936 and is currently the most important national festival in the country.

Every year, the festival is growing in both its attendance and its artistic production. Throughout the time of the grape harvest, activities are organized in the different districts and municipalities of Mendoza, which include folk festivals, concerts, theater series and artistic exhibits. The spirit of the grape harvest starts to be felt as of January, and the calendar of festivities extends until March, the date when the Central Ceremony of the National Grape Harvest Festival takes place in the Frank Romero Day Greek Theater. Of all the nights of the festival, the Central Ceremony is the big crowd puller, as it includes an impressive show, surprise shows, a new stage setting every year, and the traditional election and coronation of the National Queen of the Grape Harvest. While the star of the celebration is the night of the first Saturday in March, throughout the summer visitors will find the jollity of the local festivities, which combine artistic expressions with the regional products typical of each place. That is how in Malargüe the Festival of the Goat is held; in Lavalle the Festival of the Melon and Watermelon; and in Tunuyán the Festival of the Tonada (a typical local type of folksong). In addition, each district elects its queen how then competes for the provincial scepter to represent Mendoza in the whole country. Throughout the time of the grape harvest, activities are organized in the different districts and municipalities of Mendoza.

To make the next 2015 Harvest Festival Show unforgettable, there will be 1.000 performers onstage, 16 dramatic scenes and 45 musicians from Mendoza.

Mendoza Grape Harvest 2015

This impressive celebration interweaving wine, tourism and art, will be preceded by the classic activities of the grape harvest. One of those is the Blessing of the Fruits, which will be held on 1st March at 9 p.m in the Prado Gaucho of the General San Martín Park. This essentially religious ceremony consists of giving thanks to God for the fruits received, which will then be transformed in the spirit of a good wine. It is attended by the Virgin of Carrodilla (a locality), the Patron Saint of the Vineyards. This celebration is one of the biggest attended by the provincial authorities, the Queen of the Grapes Harvest and the district grape queens. Another classic event prior to the Central Ceremony is the White Way of the Queens, held on the night before the great festivity. For this event spectators fill the central streets of Mendoza, through which the district floats parade bearing the candidates for the provincial throne, with allegorical designs.

The great night will be on Saturday 7th March at the Frank Romero Day Greek Theater, situated at the foot of the Cerro de la Gloria in the General San Martín Park, and the venue for the Central Ceremony since 1963. To make “Illuminated Symphony of Glory” unforgettable, there will be 1000 performers onstage, 16 dramatic scenes and 45 musicians from Mendoza. In addition four stages will be set up joined by a stretch of water where shows will be held with vast choreographies,

The magnificent array of the Central Ceremony includes integrated LED screens and curtains, imposing and unique stage set and scenery, and extremely powerful sound systems incorporated into the Greek theater and on the nearby hilltops.

Mendoza starts 2015 with much more than adventure tourism, sun and good wine. It is time to join the celebration.
